Even though the idea of going on vacation is exciting, the idea of traveling for hours on a plane or bus can almost take the fun out of it. A good friend of mine took the RYA courses to become a day skipper, and now he’s trying to get me to do the same. We’ve argued back and forth and I keep trying to convince him that I don’t need sailing courses, but I’m starting to think he may be right. I really like to sail, but my understanding is pretty rudimentary. I always thought I knew enough, but I have huge gaps in my knowledge.

My father taught me how to sail, and his education veered towards the things he thought were most important. Because of that, I there are many things that I didn’t learn properly. I have some very advanced knowledge, and some areas where I know less than the average beginner. The RYA courses that help you become a day skipper will probably be sufficient, but if I decide I want to become even more knowledgeable, I could always take some of their more advanced sailing courses.

The more I think about it, the more excited I am about the prospect of taking the RYA courses and becoming a certified day skipper. After I have the sailing courses, my friend won’t be able to give me a hard time anymore, and I can really feel like a true sailor. It may seem like a small goal to some people, but with my family background, it’s really important to me
