The story of Cadillac is one of lies and deceit, at least in terms of what they were founded upon and how their brand logo was created. Originally the company was run by Henry Ford but when he left, despite the financers trying to liquidate the company, Henry Leland resurrected the company and rebranded it to Cadillac.

The name Cadillac comes from Antoine de La Mothe, Seigneur de Cadillac who founded Fort Pontchartrain in 1701 which would later become the city of Detroit, the home of the motor car in the USA. In 1901, as part of the bi-centenary celebrations, the former Henry Ford owned company took the Cadillac name in his honour.

Sadly and despite the name, Antoine was not who he seemed to be, having left France for America under mysterious circumstances and perhaps due to a crime or debt he hadn’t paid. In the new world however, he was able to assume a new identity and put together his own family crest borrowing elements of other noble families. Thus the Cadillac logo is actually based on a piece of fiction and a lie. In 2002, possible in a move to distance itself from this story, Cadillac rebranded removing many of the integral parts of the original logo.
